A skilled filmmaker and grassroots organizer, outspoken feminist leader and role model, Kathryn Xian devotes herself to improving the lives of women and girls. She is the founder of the Hawaii non-profit The Safe Zone Foundation, an organization founded to produce educational multimedia projects, and also oversees Girl Fest Hawaii, an art, music and culture festival aimed at raising awareness about women's issues.

Kathryn led a grassroots campaign to raise awareness about sex trafficking and tourism, and organized protests against a local tour company offering "Asian sex tours." She also testified at a Hawaii State House of Representatives hearing on trafficking. The hearings resulted in the passage of Act 82, which makes "promoting travel for prostitution" a Class C felony violation. Act 82 now serves as model legislation for other states.

Kathryn has received numerous accolades for her work, but says her biggest reward is the satisfaction of knowing she has made a positive impact on the lives of young women and girls. "I love that we can help people escape from very abusive relationships," she says. "It's really rewarding when you know that you've given somebody the tools they need to really take control of their future."
